BOUF is a curated marketplace, offering design-led homeware and gifts from thousands of makers and boutique brands. I founded the business after an inspiring trip to Spitalfields market in East London.
With some funding support from NESTA, I teamed up with Anil Pillai, the CEO at DigitasLBi in London, who acted as a mentor helping to carve out and wireframe the new, proprietary marketplace technology we went on to build, which would provide our Sellers with a platform to sell their goods.
Under my leadership, we grew BOUF to 35k products, 2.5k Sellers worldwide and $120k/month in GMV before selling the business to Europe’s largest, publicly-listed media company. Our pop-up events were a fantastic chance to touch the products and meet the designers behind them.
I was responsible for designing the platform, which included a bespoke “GiftFinder” prompting users who they were buying for, what the recipients age and interests were, what the occasion was and what budget they had in mind. This broke away from the traditional category “drill-down” approach. We used AJAX and Masonry to create a responsive, slick discovery tool which converted well.
I licensed the image of the Jeeves & Wooster pendant light, as it had become an iconic symbol for design-led decor, drew it up in vector and fused it with a Slab Serif face (Archer). Black & gold provided a luxe feel.
